Even Finland has dunces

15-12-2010 | 03:22:03

“One in ten schoolboys has difficulty reading,” reports Aamulehti. In the wake of the publication of the OECD’s PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) survey of 15-year-olds’ education performance, the daily highlights disappointing results for Finland.

While it remains the top-ranked EU member state, “(t)he 10% of boys with literacy issues will have trouble finding jobs,” remarks Aamulehti, noting that the country’s overall score is lower than the previous survey of 2000. “Finland’s success in the PISA rankings is due to the high performance of schoolgirls, 20% of whom demonstrate excellent reading and writing skills, as opposed to 10% of boys,” adds the newspaper.
